Orofacial Pain: An Issue Beyond Occlusion Abby Schmidt, DDS, MS Subject: 200 Orofacial Pain Credits: 1.5 Thursday, September 8: 7:30•9:00 p.m. CST Fee:$125 (non-members); $75 (members); $37.50 (students) Description Dentists are experts at treating conditions in the teeth and oral cavity. While these conditions may or may not present with pain, they are often resolved with mechanical dental treatments. Orofacial pain conditions, to include temporomandibular joint disorders, very rarely have odontogenic etiologies. This presentation will review the concepts of orofacial pain and why dental occlusion is infrequently involved in pain onset and perpetuation. This presentation will be no longer than 1 hour with time for questions after. Learning Objectives · Define orofacial pain and review its place in dentistry. · Discuss the limited role of occlusion in orofacial pain conditions · Review alternative mechanisms underlying orofacial pain conditions.
