Subject: 148—Infection Control Credits: 1.5 Description Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease. But as we think about its role as an STD, we need to understand that this virus is also a cause of oral cancers. Over 135,000,000 infections in North America alone, with up to 70% of the 45,000 squamous cancers of the head and neck. Learning Objectives Dental professionals may be familiar with HPV in the oral cavity; however, this course is designed to review: œ Share several case studies of patients with HPV at different stages of their clinical course œ Presenting the highlights of the molecular pathology of HPV and how this unique viral model has revealed new pathways in carcinogenesis œ An overview of the elements of critical thinking to manage patients at risk for, and those with HPV infections both in the short and long term Provide a review of the technology and the policy for HPV vaccines and the prospect to prevent oral and genital cancers
